Artist Statement
I grew up with film cameras and switched to digital systems in the mid-2000s. While the tools have changed, my photographic goal has not: to try to get others to see, think or feel what I experience when I capture a scene.
You’ll see a range of photos on these pages—from landscapes to buildings to two subjects I’ve primarily focused on for the last several years: Holocaust/genocide sites and the protest movement.
For the former, a prime goal is to capture a site to help bring to life events that might otherwise be forgotten; for the latter, to capture and document marches and the free flow of one, or multiple voices, in support of a cause.
The galleries include contemporary views of regions where violence has occurred. But the chance to simply live one’s life may return.... people marry, festivals are held and patrons revisit their favorite tea houses. They're all part of the circle of life.
Yet, the line between normalcy and violence can be a thin one. Whenever we think such violence has ended, it flares up--people may be imprisoned, tortured or murdered because of their ethnicity, religious affiliation or other label. This, too, is part of the circle, to our collective shame
